7 Expert Tips for Writing Ad Copy That Gets Noticed

Many copywriting beginners start on the wrong foot when they assume that copywriting is like writing blog posts or articles. Unfortunately, this isn’t the case, and then they wonder why their copy never converts.

The fact is that copywriting is nothing like blog writing or articles. It’s a different world altogether. Copywriting’s main goal is to persuade a person to do something. Content writers instead look to inform the person about a topic.

So, if you want to ace copywriting and turn yourself into a great copywriter, read this article! We will look at seven tips that can make your copy fast-selling and high-converting.

1) Headlines Are Paramount

According to experts, a headline represents about 80% of the total value of an ad copy. Get the headline wrong, and nobody will go further into your copy. Therefore, it is most important to grab the reader’s attention immediately.

So, how to make your headlines super attractive? The first thing you do is target the reader directly. Use their name (if possible), address their concerns, and cash in on your most powerful sales angle in the headline itself. Make it so specific that the reader would feel like you're talking to them one-to-one.

 

Don’t go for gimmicky headlines, though. People don’t respond well to clickbait, nor do many search engines or social media networks. But you can use this spot to tease your audience about what’s being covered.

2) Focus on the One, Not the Whole

The fundamental purpose of copywriting is to generate sales and turn the readers into customers. So, rather than talking about 'people' as a whole, speak to your reader directly.

When aiming to speak to your reader, make sure to research before you start writing. Target a specific audience, read up on them, analyze their mindset, and approach them through your copy. If you don’t get to know your customer before you try to sell to them, how are you ever going to get their attention? 

Show them that you KNOW them and their problems very well, and then present them with your specific solution. Change the ad for every demographic if necessary. For example, you can have ads that are more feminine, masculine, or geared towards one subset or another. 

Also, telling a story in your copy that your reader can relate to will help them retain their attention and get them to read through. Storytelling is key to any copywriting today, even with content writing. Storytelling is a great way to connect with your audience by showing them how you can relate to them and their problems.

 

3) Use Lots of Facts and Figures

More people will be inclined to trust you if you can back up the claims you make in your copy with relevant facts and figures. Ensure these facts are proven in some form or fashion when they click your ad and don’t mislead your customers.

For example, say, "97.66% of our customers have found that…." instead of, "Most of our customers…" Showing a percentage instead of a generalization will also show more authority and give accurate information, making you seem more trustworthy. But follow that up with actually being responsible.

4) Tap into the Power of Emotions

We are all emotional creatures, and emotions are the most substantial part of the human mind. They drive your everyday choices and actions, helping make all our decisions in life. 

Study shows that any human interaction that has emotions involved in it is far more impactful and meaningful than any interaction that's mechanical. Using words that inspire, driving an emotional response from your customer to act, is a great way to focus your copy. 

Talking about 'them' - their fears and pleasures - will hold their interest, and they will continue to read and act. Focusing on power words and simplifying what you are trying to say will allow your copy to be easily understood, letting them know the next step to take.

5) Use an Easy Conversational Tone

Do you ever have that one person you can talk to about anything like an old friend? Having a simple conversation with someone can be one of the easiest ways to make a sale, and working your ad copy to do the same is a great way to get your message across to the reader.

Keep your copy simple and easy to read. Statistics show that the average person reads at the 8th-grade level. Therefore, your copy doesn’t need to sound like a Harvard graduate to attract customers and, if it does, will probably deter them from reading. Instead, make your copy easy to read by sticking with common words.

Also, no reader will stick to your copy if you sound too formal and distant. Most people are more laid back and don’t need a formal approach to catch their interest. Talk to them like they are someone you know in a laid-back manner, not like you are trying to impress a new person.

Also, practice using active voice rather than passive voice when copywriting. Using an active voice will empower people to see how they can get the result they want by using your product or service.

 

6) Work on Attractive Visuals

Visuals matter a LOT! About 90% of the information our mind receives comes through the eyes. You can use pictures, memes, infographics, videos, screenshots, and more to provide information quickly.

One of the best ways to do this is by using photos of the product or service, especially if you can provide a before and after picture. These images will allow your customers to see the end results of working with your company and help them visualize their problem solved with your solution.  

7) Place a Definite Call to Action

Finally, don't leave your reader hanging in the air once they've come to the end of your copy. Instead, use a definite call to action which tells the reader what to do next. Be clear and concise; something as simple as “Act Now” or “Click Here” can work in some cases. 

Try making your CTA so clear that the reader would automatically act without even thinking about it. For example, make the button or link stand out with bold color or some white space to make it pop. Being clear in your instructions won’t give the reader time to second guess their actions.
